Holiday on the Rocks

Ira Koplowitz’s signature cocktail for the season.

The Mixologist:
Ira Koplowitz, Bittercube

The Backstory:
I love holiday-style cocktails, but I’ve never been a huge fan of warm cocktails. I enjoy making them for other people, but when it comes to cold weather-inspired drinks, I generally like winter flavors coming from ingredients rather than from temperature. I created the Nutty Squirrel during the fall 2008 while working at The Violet Hour. The walnut liqueur evokes the essence of the season on my palate and the combination of the maple syrup and Applejack reminds me of another cold weather flavor I enjoy, that of apple cider.

Apples are front and center in the Nutty Squirrel cocktail.

The Cocktail:

Nutty Squirrel

  • 1 ounce Bonded Rittenhouse Rye
  • 1 ounce Bonded Applejack
  • ¾ ounce lemon juice
  • ½ ounce pure Wisconsin maple syrup
  • ¼ ounce orange curacao
  • Rinse: Nux Alpina Walnut Liqueur
  • Glass: Coupe, sidecar
  1. Rinse glass with walnut liqueur. Shake ingredients over ice and strain through a tea strainer.
